TO DEVELOP THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE AND APPRECIATION OF HOLDING PATTERNS AND ENTRY PROCEDURES

Review of applicable parts, chapters, and sections of the FAR/AIM, Instrument Approach Procedures (charts), Instrument Flying Handbook (IFH), and Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) [Also possibly included: AC 60-14 (aviation instructors handbook), and the appropriate PTS books]

-Review applicable FAR/AIM parts/sections
*FAR Part 61, 65 (rating requirements)
*FAR Part 91, 167-187 (various)
*AIM, 5-3-7 (holding).
-Review instrument approach charts.
-Review applicable IFH sections
*IFH, Ch V p. 94, VIII p. 140 & 152, XII p. 206 (attitude instrument flying, navigation aids, and ATC operations and procedures).
-Review applicable POH sections (such as appropriate holding airspeeds and approach categories).
-Review entry procedures, airspeeds, wind corrections, and altitude let downs).

-Discuss Lesson Objectives
-Listen, take notes, and ask questions
-Review reference documents

-The student should have the capability to explain NDB and VOR holding entry, holding and procedure turns, timing, and approach procedures.
-Lack of appropriate reference manuals and documents.
-Lack of knowledge of aircraft performance capabilities and associated airspeeds; disorientation.
-Not adjusting airspeed when 3 minutes or less from holding arrival.
-Incorrect holding entry procedures.
-Does not recognize arrival at holding point.
-Does not comply with ATC reporting requirements.
-Uses improper timing.
-Uses improper leg lengths.
-Uses improper wind corrections.
-Unable to maintain specified parameters for airspeed, altitude and heading control.
